GOLF PLAYED ON THE GALLOW HILL SINCE 1907
THE HISTORY OF CARNWATH GOLF CLUB

Carnwath Golf Club enjoys a rich history and has some fascinating connections to barony, military and golfing heritage. Having celebrated our Centenary in 2007, golf has been played at Carnwath for approaching 120 years.

We owe much to the foresight of four men for the founding of Carnwath Golf Club and the golf we enjoy today. On Wednesday the 20th of March 1907, a meeting was held in the Carnwath Town Hall, Chaired by Robert Jackson, who brought forth the idea of establishing a golf club in the town. Reverend Sawers 'Proposed' the idea which was 'Seconded' by Robert's relation, Thomas Jackson. With great interest and as a significant owner of the local land, Sir Simon MacDonald Lockhart, Laird of the Lee Estates, offered his full support and so marked the establishment of Carnwath Golf Club.

Full of optimism after that very first meeting, the men agreed on some fundamental principles and began work on forming a council, sourcing equipment and creating the then ‘9 hole course’, first attributable to original course architect Mr William 'Willie' Auchterlonie. Following completion, the course was formally opened with great ceremony in front of sizeable crowds by Lady Hilda Lockhart, the wife of Sir Simon MacDonald Lockhart, with a solitary swing of her 'Auchterlonie Special' on Saturday the 29th June, 1907.
